Magazine features Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands resident

Jean Hendrickson, a resident at Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands in Friday Harbor, Washington, has had many opportunities to advocate for others in her life, and now she is being featured in a national magazine.

Life Care Centers of America runs more than 200 skilled nursing and rehab centers around the country and publishes a handful of residents’ life stories each year in its LEADER magazine. Hendrickson’s story was recently published in the 2016 edition.

On April 14, 2016, select associates and volunteers at Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands in Friday Harbor, Washington, became certified in the Music & Memory program.

Music and Memory is a nationally recognized program featured on major news outlets, and it has drawn the attention of millions across the internet.

Jean Hendrickson, a resident at Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands in Friday Harbor, Washington, is a published author.

There’s a story behind her book, “Joy, Living in a Nursing Home.”

Hendrickson self-published the book in 2011, when she had been living at the facility for five years (she’s now a 10-year resident), to answer the concerns that friends and family members had expressed when they found out she was living in a skilled nursing facility.

Rachelle Voth, activities assistant at Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands in Friday Harbor, Washington, stayed six hours past the end of her shift to sit with a dying resident and provide comfort. She took the initiative outside of work to become a certified nursing assistant so that she could not only help with activities but also serve the care needs of the residents.

Rehab at Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands helps former nurse

Blowing out a knee in the ’70s eventually led Janet Dann to a total knee replacement and rehabilitation at Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands in Friday Harbor, Washington. 

“I was told that, in time, all the remaining cartilage would be worn down and I would need knee replacement surgery,” Dann explained.
